The district headquarters town, Keonjhar is the
gateway to one of the most scenic destinations in India. Worth
seeing here are the Vishnu and Jagannath temples, as are the
Siddhakali and Panchabati shrines. Sanghagara waterfall (30.5 mtrs.)
and Badghagara waterfall (61 mtrs.) are close to this town. The
exciting environment of Badghagara have made it a popular picnic
spot of the state. The rich mineral deposits have been a blessing to
Keonjhar in many ways.
Natural landscapes and exuberant waterfalls cascading down forest
clad hillsides; make up just a few of the district's wondrous
attractions. Terraced valleys and forested land provide shelter to
the tribal folk who give the visitors a glimpse of Orissa's rich
past in their simple lifestyles and exotic festivities. Places to visit
Sitabinji
Situated on the river Sita, the spot has gained prominence as a
place having ancient fresco painting on a rock shelter called "Ravan
Chhaya" which is like a half opened umbrella. The painting depicts a
royal procession.
Khandadhar
It is famous for a waterfall of about 500 ft in height amidst lush
green forest. It is an ideal place for picnic.
Sanghagara
It is a small (100 ft. high) but beautiful waterfall , suitable for
outing.
Badghagara
It is yet another small (200 ft. high) but exciting waterfall. It is
one of the most popular picnic spots of Keonjhar district.
Gonasika
Surrounded by a series of valleys and wooded hills of varying
colours, the place is famous as a center of pilgrimage for the
temple of Brahmeswar Mahadev, established on the river Vaitarani. In
fact, this is the place from where the river starts flowing. A
little away from the point of origin, the river goes under ground
(and hence called Guptaganga), only to be seen jumping after a short
distance over a stone projection looking like the nostril of a cow.
The scenic beauty of the place is simply charming.
Murga Mahadeva
Situated near the Thakurani Hill in Champua subdivision by the side
of a perennial spring. It is famous for the temple of Murga Mahadeva.
Ghatgaon
About 50 km from Keonjhar towards Cuttack Goddess Tarini holds sway
over Her devotees from Her beautiful shrine.
